Sergio Calzavara iniziò la sua carriera nella marcia nei primi anni ’70, quando entrò a far parte del CS Italsider. In quegli anni si allenava insieme a Pietro Cambiaso sotto la guida di Giuseppe Malaspina, un uomo dal carattere a volte burbero e severo, ma capace di farsi voler bene da tutti i suoi atleti. Amava chiamarli con affetto “mangia meringhe”. Gli allenamenti si svolgevano al vecchio Carlini, dove molti giovani, tra cui Calzavara, crebbero grazie alla sua esperienza e passione.
Successivamente Sergio proseguì la carriera agonistica trasferendosi a Milano. Qui militò in diverse società, tra cui Pro Patria, Arrigoni e Milan Marcia. Nonostante il trasferimento, mantenne sempre un forte legame con la marcia genovese. Concluse la carriera nel 1985, a 33 anni, con la società Trionfo Ligure.
L’ultimo ricordo che Sergio ha di Giuseppe Malaspina risale al giorno delle esequie. Erano presenti anche figure importanti della marcia, come Abdon Pamich, De Gaetano e il giudice Castiglioni. Fu un momento toccante, rimasto nel cuore di chi lo aveva conosciuto.

Sergio’s last memory of Giuseppe Malaspina dates back to the day of the funeral. Important figures in race walking were present, such as Abdon Pamich, De Gaetano, and the judge Castiglioni. It was a touching moment that remained in the hearts of those who knew him.
